Three Years on A Stone –Perseverance Prevails–

The Dean of JFVM
Yasuo Kiso

Our long-cherished wish, the Joint Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Yamaguchi University and Kagoshima University has gone into its fourth year since the establishment.

Now, we are in the project to receive the EAEVE (the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education) Approval; we are hastening the pace of preparation and investigation for their evaluation.

Significant movement of this past year was that the partnership with Kagoshima University was deepened even more, and the close collaboration with the curriculum of Hokkaido University and Obihiro University was realized. We also have received an unofficial visitation of senior EAEVE members last year. Although many lacks and deficiencies were pointed out, our challenges to overcome have been clearly revealed. We have sent two young faculty members to advanced European veterinary faculties to observe their educational system and actual scenes. Moreover, we have visited four significant European veterinary faculties to exchange relevant information and to ask for their collaboration. As a result, our faculty concluded academic exchange agreement with the two faculties.

Our new eight stories building, iCOVER (International Center of Veterinary Education and Research) as a symbol of our Faculty, has been completed. Its practical rooms located between the first and fourth floor have been running since this April. When all parts of this facility finally run, likely in this coming fall, we would like to welcome you all to the unveiling ceremony. This facility is equipped with the BSL3-level practical rooms with a capacity of sixty people, which is exceptional in our country. This feature is expected to promote the education and research of infectious disease control. Additionally, the LINAC (device for radiation therapy) will be introduced in our Animal Medical Center, which facilitates more advanced treatment. The new curriculum supporting the veterinary educational core-curriculum has started, and the remote lecture system has made a smooth start. This year, the Veterinary Common Achievement Tests for participatory clinical practices should be introduced. Careful preparations are needed for the smooth implementation of core curriculum advance subjects for upper grade students. Facilities, equipment, and staff allocation for the above plan are almost ready.

Our itinerary says the application of EAEVE evaluation will take place in 2020; to achieve this goal, an official pre-visitation should occur in 2018—just in three years from now. Yet we are facing several high hurdles to cross: establishment of anatomical pathology-related practical facilities, hospital, isolation facilities, and practical rooms for large animals …etc. We will overcome each challenge by the contributions from all who are involved.

So, first of all, "Three Years on A Stone" –our continuous effort shall be made in the next three years—for the official pre-visitation.
